What dual ovenable board is used for
Major board manufacturers have developed dual ovenable paperboard grades that can replace plastic or aluminum in selected ovenable food containers, trays, sleeves, and folding carton formats. These boards are designed for applications where the package may move from freezer or refrigeration into microwave or conventional oven heating.
In airline catering, ready-meal, bakery, take-and-bake, quick-service, and prepared food programs, a single ovenable container can reduce the need to transfer food from one pan or tray into a retail carton. PET-coated ovenable board can support use in microwave or conventional oven applications, depending on the grade, temperature exposure, and food application.2

Current ovenable board examples include Fortress PET ovenable paperboard from Graphic Packaging, Trayforma PET from Stora Enso, and PrintKote paperboard portfolio products from Smurfit Westrock. Stora Enso states that Trayforma PET is designed for conventional and microwave oven trays and can be used for ready meals and bakery products with oven temperatures up to 220°C.1,2,3

Dual ovenable paperboard is most useful when the packaging must handle temperature exposure, food contact, logistics, brand presentation, and operational efficiency at the same time.
In-flight catering and prepared meals
In airline catering, a container may need to move from freezer or chilled storage to reheating and serving. Ovenable board can help reduce transfer steps while preserving a printable outer surface for brand, product, allergen, and service information.
Bakery and take-and-bake products
Bakery trays and take-and-bake formats need board selected around batter moisture, fat content, release performance, oven exposure, tray formability, and post-heating handling.
Quick-service and food service packaging
Food service cartons may prioritize folding, gluing, print surface, stacking, and speed of use more than release performance, especially when the food is not baked directly against the board.

Ready-meal packaging may need product protection, heating instructions, regulated information, UPC placement, freezer performance, graphics, and a material system that supports the full retail path.
Release, moisture, grease, and forming requirements drive the board choice
A baking tray made from dual ovenable board has different priorities than a printed food service carton. The food’s moisture level, fat content, heating method, fill temperature, and contact time all influence the right material choice.
For bakery trays, release performance matters because the food may contact the board during baking and removal. The tray needs to support forming, resist moisture and grease, tolerate heat exposure, and release the finished product without damaging presentation.
For food service boxes and catering cartons, release may be less important than folding, gluing, print quality, stacking, and branding. The same board family may offer different grades because moisture resistance, forming behavior, release properties, and print performance do not always carry the same priority.
Ovenable board can preserve the branding value of coated paperboard
Plastic and aluminum containers can solve heat and moisture needs, but they do not offer the same direct carton branding opportunities as coated paperboard. Ovenable board gives packaging teams more room to combine food service functionality with strong printed presentation.
Better retail and catering presentation
Coated paperboard can support food photography, colour systems, brand panels, usage instructions, and regulatory copy with stronger visual control.
Less repacking and relabeling
When the same package can support storage, heating, serving, and branding, teams can reduce additional handling steps in the food service workflow.
Packaging must remain convertible
The board must still score, fold, glue, cut, and pack consistently. Ovenability does not replace the need for accurate carton engineering.
