Pillar 1: Functionality

Functionality defines what the package must do before it can look good

Functionality starts with the product. A folding carton may need to hold a bottle, protect a pouch, organize capsules, display a window, support a tamper-evident feature, protect a delicate item or survive cold-chain handling.

The functional brief should define product dimensions, weight, sensitivity, storage condition, primary pack, shelf orientation, opening method, closure style and expected handling. These details shape board grade, caliper, carton style, inserts, coatings, glue areas and case pack.

Functional packaging should be tested against the real distribution path. ISTA notes that an important step in selecting and using its procedures is understanding the actual distribution environment for the packaged product.1

If a carton is difficult to scan, stock, open or display, the design creates friction. GS1 US notes that barcode placement can affect scanner readability, and recommends avoiding package edges while leaving enough white space around the barcode.2

Cost should include paperboard, print, tooling, proofing, finishing, waste, setup, labour, warehousing, logistics, inventory, damage rate, retailer requirements and reorder strategy. The right question is not only what the carton costs, but what the full packaging system costs.

Packaging design should therefore connect budget to performance. Premium finishing may be justified if it supports a high-value product. Material reduction may be justified if it does not increase damage. Logistics optimization may be valuable if it reduces storage, freight and handling issues.
