Paperboard
Paperboard is a fiber-based material that is thicker and stiffer than standard paper. In folding carton packaging, options can include SBS, SUS, CRB, FBB, URB, micro-flute or other grades depending on print quality, structure, compliance, cost and sustainability requirements.
Enhanced printing
Enhanced printing includes effects such as foil stamping, metallic ink, embossing, texture varnish, spot UV, coatings and lamination. These choices can improve presentation, but they need to be planned with the budget, material, dieline and production timeline.
Caliper

Lamination

A mockup helps visualize the result before production. It may be structural, graphic, printed or digital. It can validate format, visual hierarchy, panel placement, readability, opening experience and fit with the real product.
Crop mark
Crop marks indicate where the carton should be cut. They are tied to the dieline, bleed, folds, glue areas and visible panels. Artwork without correct marks, safe zones or bleed can create cutting or appearance issues after converting.
Specifications
Specifications define the accepted parameters for packaging: material, dimensions, tolerances, colours, finish, structure, compliance, packing, SKU, quantity, quality controls and logistics requirements. They form the basis for production and receiving.
Varnish
Varnish is a coating applied to printed material for protection or visual effect. It can be gloss, matte, textured or spot-applied. Varnish affects perceived quality, surface resistance, contrast and how light interacts with the carton.

Print files should include colours, images, bleed, marks, dielines, safe zones and finishing constraints.
Graphic terms become production constraints
Packaging artwork guidelines should define printable and non-printable elements, cut zones, folds, colours, images, fonts, barcodes and functional panels. This reduces file rework and uncertainty before printing.

A proof is used to validate appearance before production. Depending on the project, it can help check colours, text, images, placement, finish and brand consistency.
Scoring
Scoring prepares fold lines so the paperboard forms correctly without cracking, distorting or weakening the presentation.
Stripping
Stripping removes waste material after die-cutting. It matters for windows, openings, handles, complex shapes and cartons ready for folding and gluing.
Folding and gluing
Folding and gluing turns a die-cut carton blank into packaging ready to be filled, shipped or assembled. Glue areas should be planned from the dieline stage.
