The Right Finish Is Just the Beginning: Polycoated Paperboard
Polycoated paperboard adds a polyethylene barrier layer to paperboard so the package can better resist moisture, grease and oil. For foodservice, takeout, frozen food and selected industrial uses, that barrier can improve product protection, but it also needs careful review for food contact, converting, sealing, print performance and end-of-life requirements.

Polycoated paperboard is used when standard paperboard needs added barrier performance
Uncoated paperboard can absorb moisture, oil or grease. A polyethylene layer can improve resistance for selected foodservice and packaging applications, but the coating choice should be based on the product’s real exposure conditions and the customer’s end-of-life goals.
What polycoated paperboard does
Polycoated paperboard is paperboard with a polymer barrier layer, most commonly polyethylene. Stora Enso identifies polyethylene as the most widely used polymer in extrusion coating, with common barrier applications including beverage cartons, cups and frozen food packaging.1
Resists moisture, oil and grease
The coating helps protect the board when the package is exposed to liquids, grease, condensation or food moisture.
Supports stronger package performance
Paperboard stiffness and coating performance work together to support the carton’s protection and handling requirements.

Takeout meals, bakery items, pies, frozen foods, cups, beverage cartons and greasy or moist food products can require more protection than standard paperboard provides. Polycoated paperboard can help reduce leakage risk and protect the board from absorbing moisture or oil.
One coated board does not fit every food product. Hot foods, cold foods, oily foods, wet foods, frozen foods and bakery products all create different packaging demands. The barrier layer, board grade, coating weight, sealing approach, storage conditions and food-contact requirements should be reviewed before production.
Barrier coatings are used to adjust paper performance for water, grease, gas or aroma-related packaging needs, but food packaging material selection still depends on the specific food and application.2

Polycoated paperboard can also support selected industrial products and shipping applications when the package needs more durability or surface protection. Certain parts, kits, hardware, wood-related products, metal components or moisture-sensitive goods may need a coated board or barrier strategy.
The packaging decision should start with the exposure risk. A product that faces moisture, oils, abrasion, staining or rough handling may need a different board, coating, insert, sleeve, liner or secondary package than a dry retail carton.

A package may be technically recoverable in some systems but not accepted in all local paper-recycling streams.

The type and amount of coating can affect how the board behaves during repulping and fibre recovery.
Use careful sustainability language
Recyclable, compostable, biodegradable and plastic-reduction claims should be validated against the actual package and market.

Barrier performance and sustainability goals should be evaluated together because coatings can affect recovery options.
A stronger barrier can create a more complex recovery path
STI Group notes that a polyethylene barrier layer can reduce cardboard recyclability compared with mono-material cardboard packaging.3 That does not make PE coating automatically wrong, but it means the package should be assessed against performance needs, local recovery systems and customer requirements.
How to specify polycoated paperboard correctly
Polycoated paperboard should be specified only after the product, packaging structure, storage conditions, food-contact needs, coating side, barrier level, print surface, converting method and waste path are understood.
If the package requires folding, gluing, windowing, die-cutting, heat sealing or special finishing, those production steps must be checked against the coating. A board that solves one barrier problem can create another production issue if it is not tested early.
