Sustainable packaging requires more than replacing one material with another. For folding cartons, it means reviewing sourcing, structure, material efficiency, print and finishing choices, logistics, recycling guidance, and the way the package performs through its full life cycle.

Sustainability still affects how packaging is judged
McKinsey’s 2025 global consumer packaging research found that every geography surveyed includes consumers willing to pay more for sustainable packaging, with a smaller group willing to pay substantially more.2 Brands still need to balance sustainability claims with performance, price, availability and production reality.
What sustainable packaging means for folding cartons
Sustainable packaging should protect the product, use resources efficiently, support responsible sourcing, and be recoverable where practical systems exist. A folding carton can be paper-based and still miss sustainability goals if it is oversized, hard to recycle, over-finished, poorly specified, or unsupported by credible sourcing.
Where the material comes from
Paperboard packaging starts with fibre. Responsible sourcing, recycled content where appropriate, certified supply chains and material traceability all influence how credible the sustainability position is.
How the carton is structured
The package should be sized around the product, filling method, protection requirements, retail display needs and logistics path. An oversized carton can increase board use, void fill and shipping inefficiency.
How the consumer handles it after use
Paperboard cartons should be designed with realistic end-of-life handling in mind. Recycling guidance needs to be clear, accurate and aligned with the package material and local collection systems.

Sustainable packaging has to satisfy consumers and production constraints
Consumers increasingly notice packaging material, recyclability, unnecessary plastic, over-packaging and brand claims. Retailers also ask for packaging that supports shelf presentation, damage prevention, barcode readability, stocking efficiency, compliance and waste reduction.
That does not mean the most sustainable-looking option is automatically the best package. A carton must still protect the product, run through production, survive distribution and communicate clearly at retail. If the package fails, the environmental impact of damaged product, returns and rework can outweigh material savings.
For folding cartons, sustainability planning should begin before artwork approval. Material selection, structural design, coatings, finishing, dieline planning and logistics should be reviewed together so the final package can support both environmental and commercial goals.

Why paperboard is often central to sustainable packaging strategies
Paperboard can offer renewable fibre sourcing, printability, structural flexibility and established recovery pathways. The sustainability result still depends on the board grade, coating, finishing, carton design, recycling infrastructure and product requirements.
Certified sourcing and traceability
FSC states that its chain-of-custody label indicates that materials used in the finished product have met chain-of-custody requirements at each step from sourcing to distribution.3 Certification can help support responsible forest-product sourcing claims.
Design for practical recovery
The EPA reports that the overall recycling rate for paper and paperboard packaging was 80.9% in 2018, while other paper packaging such as cartons and sacks is mostly recycled as mixed paper.4 Packaging design should support realistic recycling pathways.
Reduce excess before adding claims
Right-sizing a carton, selecting the appropriate board grade, avoiding unnecessary components and improving pack-out can reduce material use without compromising the product protection that the package must provide.

Paper-based does not remove the need for specification control
SBS, SUS, CRB, FBB, URB and micro-flute each bring different print surfaces, stiffness profiles, recycled-content options, fibre sources and performance characteristics. Sustainable packaging requires selecting the grade that meets the product requirement with the least unnecessary material and the clearest end-of-life path.
How to move a folding carton program toward better sustainability
A practical sustainability review should look at the package as a system. Material choice matters, but it is only one part of the decision.
Choose the right board
Compare virgin, recycled, coated, uncoated and micro-flute options against the product’s weight, protection needs, print requirements and recovery expectations.
Review print and finishing
Confirm whether coatings, lamination, foil, varnish or specialty effects are necessary, and whether they affect recyclability, cost, lead time or claims.
Right-size the package
Use carton dimensions that fit the product and improve case pack, pallet configuration and shipping density where possible.
Communicate clearly
Avoid vague claims. Use accurate recycling instructions, certification references and material information that consumers and retailers can understand.
Use specific sustainability claims instead of broad green language
Broad terms such as eco-friendly, green or sustainable can be too vague if they are not supported by specific packaging decisions. Better claims identify the material, certification, recycled content, recyclability, reduced material use, responsible sourcing or other measurable attribute.
For paperboard folding cartons, certification and sourcing claims should be tied to chain-of-custody requirements and supplier documentation. Recycling claims should reflect the actual material combination, coatings, finishing, local recovery systems and consumer instructions.
