What are the different types of paperboard for folding cartons?
Paperboard selection affects stiffness, print quality, folding, gluing, product protection, food packaging requirements, sustainability claims, cost and lead time. SBS, SUS, CRB, FBB, URB and micro-flute are not interchangeable. Each grade should be selected around the product and the production path.
Paperboard grades behave differently in print, converting and distribution
A folding carton can be built with different paperboard grades depending on product category, visual expectations, strength requirements, food-contact context, supply chain, sustainability goals, budget and availability.
Folding carton paperboard is generally more rigid than standard paper and may be made from virgin, recycled or mixed fibers. It is then printed, scored, die-cut, folded, glued, packed and delivered according to the project specification.
Common families include SBS, SUS or CUK, CRB, FBB, URB and micro-flute. Industry guides describe folding cartons as using a broad range of virgin and recycled paperboards, often with calipers selected for the application.1

A lower-cost board can become more expensive if it creates print, folding, gluing, strength, timing or customer-approval problems. The material must match the actual job the package has to perform.
Virgin paperboard grades are often used when appearance, strength and cleanliness are critical
SBS and SUS, also called CUK in many markets, are virgin-fiber paperboard grades. They are often considered for packaging that requires strong stiffness, reliable print surface, strong brand presentation or food packaging review.
Solid Bleached Sulfate
SBS is a bleached paperboard grade, typically white and smooth, often used for premium packaging, food products, health, beauty, pharmaceutical and retail products that require high print quality. Industry resources describe SBS as a premium grade with a coated surface suited to high-quality printing.2
Solid Unbleached Sulfate / Coated Unbleached Kraft
SUS or CUK uses unbleached virgin fiber. It generally offers a natural kraft appearance, strong performance and an exterior coated surface when stronger print quality is needed. It can suit food, beverage, cosmetic, pharmaceutical or retail products looking for a more natural presentation.
Board colour and coating strongly influence printed appearance
SBS is often selected for sharp graphics and white surfaces. SUS or CUK may be selected for a more natural kraft look while maintaining good structural strength. The right choice depends on brand image, product category and production constraints.

CRB and FBB are often evaluated for cost, surface, stiffness and sustainability balance
CRB, or coated recycled board, is made with recovered fiber and a coated surface to improve printability. It is often considered for high-volume products, grocery packaging, secondary packaging and projects where recycled content or cost efficiency matter.
FBB, or folding boxboard, is a multilayer paperboard grade that generally aims for a good stiffness-to-weight ratio. It can combine a printable surface with a lightweight and durable structure, depending on the selected grade.
The choice between CRB and FBB depends on product use, protection needs, print quality, availability, food packaging requirements, desired recycled content and pricing strategy.
Coated Recycled Board
CRB uses recycled fiber and a coated surface to support printing. It can be relevant for consumer goods, dry grocery packaging, cereal cartons, secondary packaging and some private label programs, subject to product and compliance requirements.
Folding Boxboard
FBB is often selected for its stiffness-to-weight ratio, printable surface and versatility. It can suit food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, retail and consumer goods applications when the grade and documentation requirements are aligned.

URB and micro-flute solve different structure, stiffness and presentation needs
URB and micro-flute are not simple variations of standard folding carton board. They answer specific needs in stiffness, cost, natural appearance, protection, print, presentation and distribution.
Uncoated Recycled Board
URB, often called chipboard, is an uncoated recycled paperboard. It can suit projects where stiffness, cost, recycled content or a natural appearance matter, but it generally offers less premium print capability than a coated surface.
Thin corrugated structure for added protection
Micro-flute uses a thin fluted medium between outer sheets. The Fibre Box Association notes that smaller flutes such as E and F can provide improved graphic capability and increased structural capability for primary retail packaging compared with some folding cartons.3
Micro-flute is useful when the carton needs more support
Micro-flute can be considered for heavier products, multipacks, premium packaging, some food, beverage, pharmaceutical or consumer goods programs that need stronger crush resistance and shelf stability.

Prioritize print surface, premium finishing, colour, embossing, foil stamping and brand perception.
Pharma and health
Check traceability, documentation, quality, consistency, legibility, insert requirements and folding performance.
Retail and private label
Align cost, stiffness, graphics, barcode areas, stocking, palletization and replenishment.

Paperboard should be selected by the actual function of the package
Selection should integrate structural requirements, distribution path, filling process, production line, shelf life, shelf presentation, claims and customer documentation.
The board grade must be compatible with printing, die-cutting, folding and gluing
A board that looks good on paper can become the wrong choice if the surface misses the graphic target, scores crack, adhesive performs poorly, production handling becomes unstable or the carton does not stack correctly.
