The strongest paperboard choice is the grade that fits the product, package structure, print system, filling process, and buyer requirements. A lower-cost material can become expensive if it causes print limits, score cracking, bulge, glue failure, odor risk, or compliance rework.

SBS Paperboard

SBS is the premium grade for high-impact folding carton packaging

Solid bleached sulfate, commonly called SBS, is a white paperboard grade used when clean graphics, premium appearance, and reliable print reproduction matter. The Paperboard Packaging Council describes SBS as a premium grade with a brilliant white appearance and a clay-coated surface that supports high-quality printing.2

SBS is often the right substrate for health and beauty packaging, pharmaceutical packaging, food packaging, frozen food packaging, and other folding carton programs where brand presentation cannot look compromised. Its smooth surface supports offset printing, strong color control, varnish systems, foil, embossing, debossing, and other premium finishing decisions.

The tradeoff is cost and specification discipline. A premium substrate should be selected because it solves a packaging requirement. If the product needs a bright white surface, clean fine print, premium decoration, or food packaging review, SBS deserves early consideration.

SUS and CUK

Unbleached kraft grades support strength-driven folding carton programs

Solid unbleached sulfate and coated unbleached kraft are used when the carton needs durability, tear resistance, stiffness, and a strong structural profile. These materials often fit beverage carriers, dry food cartons, hardware packaging, electronics packaging, and applications where package strength is more important than a bright white premium surface.

The natural color of unbleached kraft can also support a sustainability-oriented brand appearance, but the visual tone must be intentional. Kraft appearance does not automatically make a package more sustainable. Material claims should be specific, documented, and tied to the actual board, coating, and converting choices.

For folding carton packaging, SUS and CUK decisions should be reviewed with print expectations. Brand colors, white ink requirements, varnish choices, coating zones, and finishing effects may behave differently than they do on SBS.

Recycled Board

CRB and URB support recycled content goals when the application fits

Recycled paperboard is useful in many folding carton programs, especially dry goods and secondary packaging. It still needs a real performance review. Recycled content, food-contact suitability, print quality, moisture behavior, and recyclability are separate questions.

CRB

Coated recycled board for value and recycled content

CRB is used for many dry product folding cartons where recycled content and cost control are important. It can work well for cereal, dry mixes, household products, and general consumer goods. Specification should account for print surface, moisture sensitivity, odor risk, and strength requirements.

URB

Uncoated recycled board for practical secondary packaging

URB is useful where a coated retail print surface is not required. It can support internal packaging, secondary packaging, partitions, and value-driven applications where presentation is less critical than function.

Food-contact caution

In the United States, FDA’s paper and paperboard food-contact regulations are found in 21 CFR Part 176, including provisions for paper and paperboard in contact with aqueous and fatty foods and dry food.5,6 Recycled fiber for food packaging needs review against the actual use case, product type, and applicable regulatory requirements. Recycled content should never be treated as a blanket approval for direct food-contact packaging.

FBB

Folding box board balances stiffness, surface quality, and material efficiency

Folding box board, or FBB, is often selected when a packaging program needs a reliable balance between surface quality, stiffness, and material efficiency. Its layered construction can support a lighter board structure while maintaining useful rigidity for many folding carton applications.

FBB can be a strong candidate for food packaging, personal care packaging, retail cartons, and packaging programs that need good print performance without defaulting to the most premium white board option.

The decision should be made at the specification level. Caliper, grain direction, coating, converting performance, scoring, and product weight should be reviewed before assuming FBB can replace SBS, SUS, or CRB.

Micro-Flute

Micro-flute supports stronger retail cartons and protective packaging

Corrugated board uses a fluted medium between linerboards to create a stronger structure. Fibre Box Association describes common flute profiles including A, B, C, and E flute, with E flute having a finer profile than larger shipping-box flutes.8 Smaller flute profiles can support retail packaging where structure and surface presentation both matter.

Micro-flute is useful for small appliances, electronics, beverage carriers, heavier retail packs, club-store packaging, toy packaging, and applications that need protection with a more polished shelf presence than standard shipping corrugated.

A folding carton substrate directly affects print performance. SBS may support cleaner fine detail and premium graphics. CRB may require different ink strength or press adjustment. Kraft grades may change brand color perception. Micro-flute may require a different print approach than conventional folding carton board.

Recycled content can be valuable, but sustainability decisions in folding carton packaging should include material weight, product protection, spoilage prevention, recyclability, coatings, adhesives, windows, inks, logistics, and the actual end market for the package.
