Bleed Specifications

Bleed gives artwork room to print and trim correctly

Bleed is the artwork area that extends beyond the final trim line. It gives the printer and converter a safety zone so that background colours, images or graphics that touch the edge of a panel can be trimmed cleanly without unwanted white gaps.

Adobe’s InDesign print handoff guidance explains that print PDFs should capture bleed details and use document bleed settings when exporting files for print.1 In folding carton work, bleed is especially important because graphics often cross panel edges, fold areas or display-facing surfaces.

At the file-preparation stage, bleed should be set before artwork is treated as final. Adding it late can force design adjustments, image extension or panel corrections.
