Folding Carton Packaging Substrates: SBS Board and FBB Properties

SBS and FBB are two common virgin-fibre paperboard choices for folding carton packaging. Both can support high-quality printed cartons, but they differ in fibre composition, construction, stiffness-to-weight performance, print surface, converting behaviour, availability, and cost structure.

SBS and FBB can both be used for folding cartons, but their fibre composition and construction influence stiffness, weight, print appearance and converting performance.

Material Selection

The best board is not always the heaviest board

Cartonboard needs mechanical strength, stiffness and rigidity to protect products through distribution and use, while also remaining suitable for cutting, creasing, folding and gluing.2 A heavier board may not be the most efficient choice if another grade can deliver the required stiffness and converting performance at a lower grammage.


SBS vs FBB

How SBS board and FBB differ in folding carton packaging

SBS and FBB are both used for folding cartons that require strong presentation and reliable converting. The practical difference is not simply white board versus lighter board. The difference is how the board is constructed and how that construction performs in print, folding, filling and retail.

SBS Board

SBS is made from bleached virgin fibre and is valued for a smooth, all-white surface, high-quality graphics, structural integrity and use across foodservice, healthcare, luxury goods and other demanding packaging applications.3 It is commonly selected when brand presentation, colour quality and clean appearance are priorities.

Folding Box Board

FBB is a layered folding boxboard designed to balance printability, stiffness and material efficiency. Metsä Board describes folding boxboard as a lightweight board that can reduce raw material use, transport weight and waste while still protecting products and supporting product promotion.4

SBS Board

When SBS board is a strong folding carton choice

SBS stands for Solid Bleached Sulfate. It is generally associated with a bright, smooth and consistent white surface, which makes it a common choice for folding cartons that need high shelf impact and refined graphics. SBS is often used for food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, personal care and premium retail packaging.

Because SBS uses bleached virgin fibre, it can support clean visual presentation, detailed printing and premium finishing effects. The Paperboard Packaging Council describes SBS as a premium grade with a clay-coated surface for high-quality printing and a solid white sheet appearance, commonly used for food packaging and many high-end retail products.5

SBS is not automatically the right answer for every carton. It must still be compared against required stiffness, caliper, product weight, filling conditions, finishing requirements, sustainability goals and budget. A carton can look premium but still underperform if board direction, score design, closure style or caliper are wrong for the application.

FBB Board

When FBB board can improve stiffness and material efficiency

FBB stands for Folding Box Board. It is typically a multi-layer board that combines bleached chemical pulp surface layers with mechanical or chemi-thermomechanical pulp in the middle layer. That construction can help deliver useful stiffness at a lower grammage than some alternative boards.

Metsä Board describes its Classic FBB as a fully coated folding boxboard with lightweight construction, excellent stiffness and high yield, with properties suitable for demanding packaging applications across food, healthcare and branded consumer goods.6 This type of stiffness-to-weight performance is a major reason FBB is often considered for folding carton programs.

FBB still needs application-specific review. The grade, coating, caliper, grain direction, forming behaviour and print expectations should be tested against the carton style and the product. It can be an efficient choice, but the final decision should be based on performance in the actual carton, not only on a material name.

Stiffness and Direction

Why stiffness matters in folding carton board selection

Stiffness is one of the most important paperboard properties for folding cartons. It affects how the carton stands, folds, resists bending, runs through filling equipment, protects the product and presents on shelf.

Machine Direction

MD stiffness

Machine direction follows the primary fibre orientation created during paperboard manufacturing. It can influence how the carton folds, resists bending and behaves through converting and filling.

Cross Direction

CD stiffness

Cross direction runs perpendicular to the machine direction. The balance between MD and CD stiffness matters when the carton needs stable panels, clean folds and predictable assembly.

Taber Testing

Measured bending resistance

Paperboard stiffness is often evaluated using methods such as Taber stiffness, which measures resistance to bending. Test values should be interpreted with caliper, grain direction and carton geometry.

Selection Framework

How to choose between SBS and FBB for a carton project

The right substrate depends on the product and the carton’s job. A folding carton for cosmetics, pharma, frozen food, dry grocery, retail display or personal care can require different stiffness, print surface, colour control, compliance, odour profile, moisture tolerance and filling-line performance.

The choice should also account for the selected structure. A reverse tuck carton, auto-bottom carton, sleeve, tray, carrier or display carton can place different stress on the board. The same board grade may perform differently when panel size, closure style, score design and glue areas change.

For production readiness, SBS and FBB should be reviewed with artwork, colour expectations, coatings, finishing, die-cutting, folding, gluing, packing method, product weight, shipping path and storage conditions. A board sample alone does not prove that the full package will perform correctly.
