SUS, CUK and CNK are part of the unbleached kraft board family
In folding carton specifications, the terminology can vary by mill, brand and region. Graphic Packaging describes coated unbleached paperboard as also known as coated unbleached kraft, or CUK, and solid unbleached sulfate, or SUS. It describes these boards as strong and durable with resistance to tears, punctures and corner crushes.1

SUS and CUK paperboard are typically associated with longer kraft fibers, high tear resistance and strong durability. The Paperboard Packaging Council states that CUK is made from unbleached virgin kraft fiber, primarily from southern pine softwoods, and that the long, large pine fibers give the finished sheet strength and tear resistance.2
This structural profile is why kraft-back board is often reviewed for beverage carriers, frozen foods, dry foods, hardware, household products, electronics, takeout and other applications where the carton may experience more stress.
Stiffness and tear strength are not abstract numbers. They affect whether the carton holds shape, resists damage, performs on the packing line, stacks correctly and reaches the shelf with a credible appearance.

Cold, damp or wet environments require more than a generic SUS specification
SUS and kraft boards are often discussed for strength, but high-moisture performance depends on the exact board, coating, barrier, primary pack, storage condition, product type and handling path.
Graphic Packaging describes coated unbleached paperboard as suited to beverage and frozen food applications, and describes uncoated unbleached paperboard as having excellent tear strength and moisture resistance.4 That type of performance language still needs to be applied carefully to the specific product and package.
For frozen food, beverage, chilled, takeout or damp-environment packaging, the team should review coating side, PE or alternate barrier requirements, glue performance, condensation exposure, case pack, palletization and retailer specifications before approval.

SUS is not automatically better than every other board. It is better suited to certain carton jobs. The correct comparison depends on structure, print quality, strength, cost, sustainability goals, product sensitivity and production constraints.

SUS performance depends on how the carton is engineered. Dieline layout, grain direction, score design, panel geometry, glue area, coating coverage and packing method all affect whether the strength of the board becomes strength in the finished package.
